Services FAQ

Service questions.

Which diesel vehicles need a smog check?

In California, diesel vehicles from model year 1998 and newer with a gross vehicle weight rating of 14,000 lbs or less generally require a Smog Check.

Do hybrids need a smog check?

Yes. Hybrids are tested like gasoline vehicles. Fully electric vehicles are exempt.

What is a change-of-ownership smog?

When a vehicle is sold, the seller generally must provide a valid smog certificate. Newer gas and hybrid vehicles in their first few model years are usually exempt.

I just moved to California — what do I need?

Most vehicles previously registered in another state need a California Smog Check to be registered here. Bring the vehicle and your out-of-state title or registration.

What is a gross polluter?

A vehicle that fails with emissions far above the limit is flagged by the Bureau of Automotive Repair as a gross polluter and must be certified at a STAR station.

Do you do emissions repairs?

No — we’re a test-only station. We test, certify and explain any failure, but we never perform repairs.

How much do your services cost?

$41.75 for most vehicles with our coupon, plus the $8.25 certificate on a pass. Diesels and some vehicles are priced separately — call for your exact price.
